blood, anyone?
Our school have been having this Project Agape for the past few days. It is a project initiated by our students to help with the limited supply of blood in the blood bank. 2 doctors came down from NUH to help us. Apparently, they were expecting a big crowd. But, there were only 75 bags of blood...and 20 plus people were turned down because of various reasons, low blood count etc.
I really wanted to donate but was frightened off by all the horror stories, like how thick the needle is, and how they had to re-insert the needle in again and again because the vein is too small (this acutally happened to one of my friend, i got her to show me her arm, and it has tiny bruises on it, 3 to be exact).
However, today during assembly, I set my mind on it because of what the teacher said "Gurmit Singh could be visiting the school today."
Hey, its not everyday some celebrity visit our school, right? I just want to catch a glimpse of him =)
Anyway, i got what i wanted when he gave a short talk today during the Year 1s' assembly! (He actually donated before coming to the assembly.) Well, We were in class for Class Contact Time, when suddenly someone shouted that Gurmit was in the hall, almost all of us dashed out the class, to the hall. We were in time to catch his last few sentences. He's really humourous too. Pity i forgot my phone!
And if i'm donating blood, i might be excused for activities during training! YAY!
But, that's not entirely why i decided to donate. Imagine, if i'm a patient already being pushed in into the operating theatre, then pushed out again due to the inadequate amount of blood left in the blood storage, I would be SO sian la. Situations like that happened because people find it troublesome and inconvenient (though i thought that the majority avoid it due to the possible pain involved) to make a trip to the hospital for blood donation. We shouldn't let this reasons stop us from doing something that could save a life.
Unfortunately, I did not hand in a consent form. In order to donate blood, I have to get my parent's signature. Which i dont. But i heard there will be a second blood donation drive around July. =)
So people, though the blood donation drive is held in my school, members of public are also welcome to donate blood! Will be updating you guys nearer the date =)
Signing off,
Joanne (always 17!)
